CCC is a journal which does not think the university knows what culture is. It is a journal which also does not think the market knows what’s best for our shared culture. We here at CCC want to have a conversation with artists and students about the status of culture. We believe that we all have common interests and a shared culture.
Our project began in the corridors of the university. It was motivated by our alienation from how the university treated culture. We were not happy with what the university had to say about innovation, creativity and freedom. The university is being turned into a market. The link between the university and the public is being eroded.
We recognise that the demands of the market have already placed us all under pressure. The only public culture that is allowed to exist is that which had been paid for by the market or sanctioned by the state. Anything else is declared criminal, unruly, nonsensical and unworthy of engagement.
We at CCC believe this situation is abhorrent. It is time to respond. Something needs to be done to reverse the marketisation of public culture and the university. We want to talk about how we can do this together. Spit some lines, create some sounds, write, draw, comment, discuss, debate.
